It seems ink is rather flammable, it burns quite nicely, and more than that, it creates a great smoke filled fog. Something that is rich in quality, and creates a haze that blocks the vision quite well.
People stand back because the scent was probably so strong, that not even the neighborhood rats could stand it. It didn't help that the firemen brought their own device that also created a lot of black smoke.
