Description
Colorized photo from 1943, May 14
Original title: Filling up with gas on the day before rationing
Photographer: John Collier Jr.
Location: 1399 Belmont St NW, Washington DC
This picture shows just before they started to implement a gas rationing system that only allowed 4 gallons of gas, or 8 gallons if you were a medical worker or factory worker. As it happens this particular station got in trouble for breaking the rules a year later.
Finding this location was hard, luckily someone found it for me, its currently an apartment building, but the two in back are still there.
I used 1930 colors as the building had a Deco flavor, it could have been painted all one color, but its more fun to have a few colors. I was able to find too much information about the Hood Tire man, but I couldn't find a neon version, just every other version. I used the colors I found and used that for the lights. The sign was designed to animate.
