Your guess is as good as mine, exactly what she's doing. The stove is a 1917 Westinhouse Automatic Electric Range, type 3-19. The alarm clock was standard and so was the timer, along with the controls beneath it. This was the first electric stove made, at first I thought this was some kind of calibration test, but this was 1923, and that's not a new model.
Researching this image; the equipment is made up of rheostats and thermocouplers. The bucket may have ice and is being used as some kind of control. The bread either has a tube in it, or a fat probe, its unknown. The wiring would not pass code today, but back then it was totally fine to have single wires crossing over each other. Spliced randomly, some leads open, with metal tags hanging off each one.
