Original title: Facing trunion bearings 16" barbette side rails
Photographer: Unknown
Location: 130 Arsenal Yards Blvd, Watertown, MA
This large, impressive machine is used for precisely machining the trunnion bearings of 16" barbette side rails. It operates by securely holding the part in place while various mechanical arms and tools meticulously shape and smooth the metal surfaces. The machine ensures that the bearings are perfectly aligned and fitted, critical for the functionality and durability of the barbette cannon. Its size and complexity reflect the importance of precision in this heavy-duty industrial task.
It also makes a fun ride.
Coloring note: The original had a small sign in the corner, which I had to adjust. I also removed what seemed to be a small person in the background as it was distracting. I couldn't find this exact machine, but Niles tools from that era were typically emerald green, which was common for tools back then. This building still exists and appears either green or beige, depending on the area. If it was green, the tool wouldn't stand out well.
