This man is rough turning a 16" Barrett recuperator cylinder in Watertown Arsenal in Massachusetts. The arsenal opened in 1816 and lasted till 1968, it played a significant role in producing military ordnance.
A recuperator cylinder is essential in artillery for absorbing recoil and returning the barrel to its firing position. Due to their size and precision requirements, manufacturing these components necessitated large, specialized tools. The arsenal's facilities were equipped to handle such complex engineering tasks.
