Description
Hand colored photo from 1920
Original title: 16" Barr. carr. rough turning recuperator cylinder
Photographer: Unknown
Location: 130 Arsenal Yards Blvd, Watertown, MA
This man is rough turning a 16" Barrett recuperator cylinder in Watertown Arsenal in Massachusetts. The arsenal opened in 1816 and lasted till 1968, it played a significant role in producing military ordnance.
A recuperator cylinder is essential in artillery for absorbing recoil and returning the barrel to its firing position. Due to their size and precision requirements, manufacturing these components necessitated large, specialized tools. The arsenal's facilities were equipped to handle such complex engineering tasks.
Coloring notes: There wasn't much I had to change in this other than to remove that sign at the bottom. When I was making this I was wondering why that stuff was all over the floor and why it was a slightly different color. I decided it must be a table, which makes a lot more sense. This image provided a range of 1908-1926, based on his clothes I'm placing him around 1920.
