Despite these tools being well over a hundred years old, they are totally functional. Keeping them well oiled, preventing the belts from drying out, these lathes still work and are still used even today. They may not be as efficient as newer tools, but don't tell them that. The lathe on the right is a treadle lathe, an apprentice would use that, usually a teenager, would have to pump that foot pedal all day long to make it work. As the boys experience grew, he would be allowed to use the larger lathe.
