Description
Colorized photo from 1895
Original title: Machine division in Tuskegee Institution
Photographer: Unknown
Location: Tuskegee, AL
This is the Tuskegee institute, one of the first trade schools in america. They taught everything here, blacksmithing, machine shop, carpentry, tin smithing, being a cobbler, working a farm, etc. It was designed to teach black students primarily and was a private school. It was founded by a former slave and slave owner, they went into business together.
The school at first didn't have a lot of money so they couldn't buy things like a device that will keep the place warm in the winter, hence all the sweaters.
The gave me a wide range of dates from 1890-1930. I placed it at 1895 due to that guy on the left, his hair cut is from around then, plus they have very few lights.
