A Newton slotting machine, also known as a keyseater, is a specialized type of machine tool designed for cutting internal shapes and keyways into workpieces. This machine is essential in industries such as manufacturing and metalworking, where precision and accuracy are paramount. The Newton slotting machine operates by moving a vertical ram with a cutting tool up and down in a reciprocating motion. During this process, the workpiece remains fixed in place on a worktable, and material is removed with each pass of the cutting tool.
Key components of the Newton slotting machine include the ram, which holds and moves the cutting tool, the tool holder, which secures the tool to the ram, and the worktable, where the workpiece is clamped. Additionally, a feed mechanism allows for precise adjustments of the workpieces position, ensuring accurate cuts. This machine is widely used for producing internal keyways, splines, and slots in gears, pulleys, and other components, making it a versatile tool for both small-scale and large-scale production. The ability to handle a variety of materials, from metals to plastics, further enhances its utility in various applications.
Coloring notes – Like many of these giant machines, there are no physical evidence of them left, the best I could find were illustrations. But it was from there that I learned that the machine in the back, was not a part of this machine, even though it sure looks like it could be.
The original machine didn't have covers for the back, so I assume non OEM parts would be an off color. I'm not quite sure what that part is, I do know the bit isn't doing anything and he's posing for the camera. I'm also unclear if those gears in the background are parts he's made or if those are spares for the machine.
