Description
Colorized photo from 1936
Original Title: Artillery production
Photographer: Unknown
Location: Washington Navy yard (probably)
This man is measuring the outside diameter of a cannon at the Washington Navy Yard. Weapons of war require high precision, and these cannons are no exception. Every measurement, from the bore to the exterior, must match the blueprint exactly. Here, a workman uses a large micrometer to ensure the cannon's dimensions are to spec. Notice the large windows that provide ample natural light; although there were electric lights, they were small and insufficient on their own.
This image is a companion piece to one I already made: Lock, Stock, and Barrel. The other image was the long side of the barrel, this is a close up of him measuring.
