Original Title: Krupp gun factory number 1
Photographer: Bain News
Location. Essen Germany
This company has a very long history, over 400 years old, started in the mid 1500. The original Krupp would buy up abandoned houses left over from the black death. And he made a mint on it. Later on they made guns, and from there it was history. The made mostly weapons of war, ships, cannons etc.
World war one, their business really took off, by 1918, they had over a 160,000 employees, presumable in a different room than this one. The depression hit them bad though, they lost a lot of money and fired many.
This room, is complex, its not as bad as I thought it was going to be, the machines are mostly the same looking, either metal or green. I left the cannons different shades of color, because I wasn't sure what they would look like in those days, other than it was a form of steel or chromium nickel.
The center of the room are all electric lathes with huge motors, but oddly the ones on the edges are all belted. I don't know if they just didn't want to be wasteful, and kept the belt driven, but its an interesting mix. I do know that if the belts were in the center, they couldn't operate those huge gantry cranes. People put a lot of stock in chain in those days. And I'm not even sure where they brought it, other than to the next station. Each gantry is equipped with a tea pot for some reason. But not the one in the back, the lightweight version. I was able to find a vintage gantry that was bright yellow, so the color should be accurate. I would think it would make sense, since I would like to know where that thing is at all times.
This factory invented alloy metals, and also created some of the first electric forges.
