In the Watertown Arsenals' Seacoast Shop, the machine shop department focused on producing and repairing heavy artillery and coastal defense weapons using milling machines. These machines were essential for shaping metal components with precision. Students from local technical schools or apprentice programs gained hands-on experience by working alongside skilled machinists, learning to operate milling machines, perform maintenance, and understand artillery manufacturing and repair processes.
Established in 1816, the Arsenal was a critical site for military ordnance production through multiple conflicts. Operations ceased in 1967, and the site was later redeveloped into the Watertown Arsenal Historic District for commercial and residential use.
