Description
Hand colored photo from 1937
Original title: Railroad parts. Baldwin Locomotive Works. Man working at machinery.
Photographer: Lewis Hine Wick
Location: 500 N Beacon St, Watertown, MA
This is the Baldwin Locomotive Company, founded in 1832 and closed in 1972. The building is still in use today for recycling and processing bottles.
The tool shown is a giant planer used to level metal locomotive parts. Unlike typical planers, this large machine accommodates the massive scale of railroad components. The planer remains stationary while the workpiece is attached to a movable table, which slides back and forth. The operator controls the head's side-to-side and up-and-down movements to create a perfectly flat surface. Notice the size of those metal curls-indicative of the machine's impressive capabilities.
Coloring notes: Its hard finding these huge tools, but I did find this one, Niles tools are largely an emerald green, but the top pieces were painted yellow for some reason. They weren't brass, it was just yellow. Can you imagine the box this thing came in!
The plant itself exists today, the colors for the beams were either beige or a weird off green turquoise color. So I went with a bit of both, if the background was green, the machine wouldn't stand out.
