Description
The mortar and pestle is one of the most recognized pieces of equipment in a pharmacy. It's used for crushing and mixing ingredients. That thing on our left is called a pill rolling machine, it makes pills.
The process of making pills isn't actually that hard. You start by mixing all the dry ingredients in the mortar, until everything is finely ground and mixed well. Sap, or some kind of sticky substance is added in and then mixed, it forms sort of a clay like compound.
From there, the pharmacist may use a syringe to create a uniform bead. Or they may use the back of the pill roller, fancier models will have a flat board in the back with a height gauge. The back of the roller tool would be used to make a snake out of the medicine. That long strip is then placed on the grooves, and the upper plate is rubbed against the lower and you get a number of medicine balls. They then fall into the tray at the bottom, which was usually removable. The medicine would dry and harden up, and then placed in jars for sale.
