This was the Centennial Exposition of 1876, there were thousands of displays just like this one, each showing off their trade. It became almost like an art form, each one trying to out do the others with a really dynamic display. Some of them looked great, others looked like they weren't trying. I applaud the efforts here. It was displayed nicely. I really like how they weaved the bottles on the left.
The Hance brothers were flavor chemists. They made flavors for medicine and soda for pharmacies. They had a ton of flavors such as: raspberry, blackberry, cherry, peach, pear, grape, strawberry, plum, quince, currant and more. They sold it as a liquid, syrup and as a powder. Flavors added to mineral water would create a fruit drink, add carbonation and you have soda.
Its hard to know if all of these bottles were flavors or if some were random chemicals, as they did sell some medicine as well. I'm still not sure what they did for hearing loss, and yet they had a medicine cure all for it. I wanted everything to be colorful because flavors are colorful, I looked most of them up to verify.
I still wonder how heavy that alter is, the center looks like cast bronze and the rest looks like marble. The backing of the bottles also looks like marble. And while its screwed down, I so want to lift those domes to let the pills go free. I also think its interesting that they added detail to the ceiling, something most would ignore. I think there is stained glass on the right, or at least I colored it so.
