Before there were pharmacies, people would go to local herbalist. The herbalist would take a variety of plants from their garden, mix them into a bowl then grind them up into a slurry. What they did with that slurry probably varied from person to person. They could make it into a salve, or a pill of some kind.
Did it work? Sure, the leaves were crushed into a mulch paste... oh you mean on the human, who knows... I think the power of believing it will work was probably the real medicine.
