Colorized photo from 1921 July 8
Original Title: Man with ax breaking barrels on sidewalk
Location: Washington DC
I think most sane people would simply crop this off right around that white line. But i really liked that one boy with the beanie. His pose, expression and motion really tells the story. Probably because he was sprayed with the first one.
Without him there, it would just be a bunch of grinning yokels. Cleaning it up meant that I had to recreate parts of it. While I was able to extra quite a bit of detail from the bright spots, some of it had to be worked on by hand. One guy was removed totally because his face was too far gone.
Normally I would ignore the images that were this damaged, but I really liked the faces. It was like these were all the extra's that Rockwell didn't choose.
An interesting note though, in 1900, people wore suits, ties, hats, jackets. The female's would never show leg, always wore too much. Simply 20 years later and we have people in much more casual looks. One boy is wearing a pair of Converse. No stiff collars, bowlers, etc.
