Who else wants to visit the city of wonderment? It's a city made up of large unusual machines located inside under glass. A large spacious area, designed to showcase the latest in technology, and wonders from around the world.
While this isn't an actual city, it really could be. This is the Paris Exposition from 1889. A worlds fair that allows each country to set up an exhibit booth to show off their latest wares and offerings. The buildings were huge, some longer than 1500 ft, over a 150ft tall, no center supports.
This isn't the only room, there were many rooms, some had machine shop tools, others had ceramics, carpets, and art. It was a lot like a box store we have today, only this was bigger and probably warmer, and it wasn't a store.
The fair was located in front of the Eiffel tower, a few years after it was built.
Check out the cranes in the back, there are at least three in there. Rooftops, floor samples, huge wheels, tall things, short things, that thing on the left looks like a moonshine still. Take a look on the left, there is a spiral staircase that has two sides. See that tall platform? If you follow that, you'll see triangular trusses. Those are actually rails, they would take a tram back and forth on that. It allowed people to see everything in all directions. They had these in every area of the show.
It looks like they were building parts of this still when they took a picture, on the lower left, I see scattered tools and parts. Can you find where the guy left his hat?
Also can you imagine going up that ladder on the left? I would not want to be the one.
