Remember when you were a kid, and you would get a weekly allowance. Being a kid you wouldn't think about saving any of it, so you would spend it as soon as you got it. It was only a few cents but it was worth buying something with it.
This store had a 1 cent chocolate bar (about 25 cents today, which is still not bad). He would buy two and share one with his brother, or maybe they both gave the money but he would pay because he can reach the counter. Perhaps they were friends and the barefoot one was too poor to buy his own.
In any case, they would come here, probably the only store in miles. They had a pretty good selection of goods. Despite it being June, they still have Easter candy left. It almost makes me wonder if this store is still there with that same Easter candy.
