Description
Colorized photo from 1864 July
Original Title: Engine E.M. Stanton
Photographer: Andrew Russell
Location: Alexandria, Va
This is the E.M. Stanton, named after Edwin McMasters Stanton, who was the secretary of war for most of the Civil War. This 4-6-0 locomotive was built in 1862 for the USMRR (United States Military Rail Road).
Back in the day, when trains were new, they painted them with candy colors, probably to show off they had them. They were tricked out with colorful pinstripes and paintings. The original colors aren't known however, so this is my interpretation of the coloring.
