During the Civil War period, people would name trains after people that either designed them, or did things in the war. This particular train was named after General Herman Haupt, he was an American civil engineer, an executive, and a railroad construction engineer.
Built in 1863, it was powered with wood and has a 4-4-0 design. It was specifically designed by the military to be used in war to transport troops. And it held up, and survived the war, later on it was bought and used for other things.
