Description
Colorized photo from 1890
Original title: Albion, redwoods logs on railway train going to dumping grounds
Photographer: Unknown
Location: Albion River, Little River, CA
When I researched this image, it showed up under a number of sites, each one had a different description, message and even year. One of them seemed to be much more informative and said the engine was a Baldwin 2-4-2T, which I assume is accurate. But I don't know a thing about locomotives. When I looked up that model, I did find engines that sort of looked like this one. But I think this one was older than the models I saw. This one had pinstripes and I'm pretty sure, more brass.
Those engines all did seem to be greenish, so mine is greenish. But because it didn't match any of the images I found, and it did look older, I went with red, because I like red wheels.
I'm still not sure why the engine is in the middle like that. Seems like it would be really hard to see that way. And I can't imagine someone would ride on top and shout out instructions. I suppose its possible that those logs were ready to some how be dumped, and the train caught up with it.
Everyone is balanced at the edge of the bridge, and standing under the dumbest part of the log, the bottom. Only rope holds these things on. But that's how people posed then, on and under things. The ladies on the other hand were facing in the wrong direction. I have no idea why.
This picture shows how they stripped out the mighty 2000 year old redwoods, to make lumber. They would take these down and dump them into the river some how.
