Description
Colorized photo from 1910, August
Original Title: Atlantic Ave, Subway Entrance
Location: 579 Atlantic Ave, Brooklyn, New York
One of the enjoyable things about colorizing old photos is when they object your working on, still exists. That building on the left still exists, they took out the floor and made it into a skylight, but it still exists. I believe they took the colors from the past and put it on the current one, and I used those same colors. I think though in the original the roof was copper, and being that it was made only two years prior to this photo, it would still be a little shiny.
The train station in the background survived till about 1970 I think, so there were pictures of what it looked like. Now its a big mall.
This photo was marked with a date range of 1910-20, but the posters in the background said 1910, and one said August. And this was verified with the magazines I was able to find in the newsstand.
What I like about this, is that one cop looking at us. When I watched Bugs Bunny, the flatfoot, would always have that big bushy mustache, and they looked just like this guy.
If you look carefully, each stair riser has a Heinz 57 on it.
The train, is actually a type of street Trolley. I had a hard time finding a train card that had open sides like that. Must have been really drafty in the winter. But Since its going to Coney Island, my guess is, its only used in the summer.
