Built in 1901, this is the Main Street Station, located in Richmond Virginia. Designed by Wilson Harris and Richards of Philadelphia, the architecture they are using is the French Renaissance Style.
In its day it was the center of travel, it was the way to go to city to city. But with the invention of the car, people could do it themselves, and this station was being used less and less. The station was used till 1975 then it closed.
However after much renovation it opened again in 2003, it was marked an historic landmark, and once again its being used as a passenger train hub. The building has changed very little, only the pointy parts on the corners are gone.
The train shed is significant because its the last one surviving of this style. But its not being used to cover trains. Instead today they use it to host events.
While the building stands proudly, its mostly hidden by an interstate. The road almost wraps around the entire buildings. If your in a car today, you would be at roof level with it, past those awnings.
