I research all my work, partly so I can get accurate colors, and partly because I'm simply curious about its history.
This was tricky to research. Grand Central Station was reconstructed in 1904, they finished it in 1913. However the photo said this was shot in 1904, by a company that made colorized post cards of places people might want to visit. But since the building wasn't officially running until 1913, I'm not sure where or when this is. I can only assume that when they scanned the slide, they read the date wrong, because this should be the old station.
In 1902, there was a large train accident and they decided to reconstruct the building at the same time. They removed most of the block to make space, because the new one was going to be much larger. So I'm thinking this was shot in or before 1902, probably in the winter. So they took the picture either because it was the last time this station was going to be used, or they did it just before the accident. The current building is vastly larger than this, but it shares similarities. Arches, the dental molding lights and a few other things.
