Description
Colorized photo from 1949
Original title: City of Contrasts
Photographer: Stanley Kubrick
Location: 197 N State St, Chicago, IL
This photo was from an assignment in Look magazine, Stanley Kubrick worked for them for a few years. He wanted to show the contrasts in a city, where this part of town they could only show non vulgar things. Whereas on another street (West Madison), they had strip-tease girls.
The original black and white is actually very good, it stands up by itself just fine. I wanted the color to be full and rich as well, showing just how lively it really was then. The reflections were a real pain to do though. But adding the reflections add depth.
The colors came from photos of each place. The Chicago theater is still here today, though, in this picture there is a dark background the sign for some reason. State lake, was around till the 1980's and the sign didn't change much. There were night pictures of that very place, and that's where the colors came from for that.
I couldn't find an exact match for the bus with the light up circle in the back, but all of them were blue, so it was probably blue. The movie poster for the "He walked by night" did exist. The center red stripe in the street, could have been gray or pink, as the pavers they use in Chicago are pink clay bricks, not granite blocks.
