Perhaps it was lively back in the day, and simply a happy place to be, this is Gay Street. Located in Knoxville, Tennessee, established in 1790, this street still has some of the original buildings.

By 1850, this was one of the first paved streets, as you can see here. Interestingly, both before this image was taken, and after, by a few years in either direction, the building on the right was burned to the ground. Just a fun fact.

Today, this street still has some of the oldest buildings around, and is still a viable commercial area.
