The game of Croquet has an unusual history, it started a long time ago in England where they used flamingos (bred specifically for this purpose) and they used a hedgehog instead of a ball. The game was complicated to play because as you would imagine using an animal for a ball means the ball can escape at any time. And using a bird for a club is absurd, after all the bird is upside down when you engage the club, and well birds poop, and where do you think that poop goes when the bird is upside down? That's right, it squirts in your face and dribbles down your hand. So it was decided that long mallets and wooden balls would be just as good.
