Description
Hand colored photo from 1942, July
Original title: Washington, D.C. Negro barbershop on U Street, N.W.
Photographer: Marjory Collins
Location: U Street, NW, Washington DC
In a close knit community, a barbershop became more than just a place to get a trim and a shave, it became beacon of community and camaraderie, even during segregation. Over time, the Black community would come together and talk about the latest news and other issues while getting neatened up. Barbers probably were the go to place to learn about what's happening in the area, because they aren't just cutting hair, they listen to everyone and learn the latest news quickly.
It would have been really nice if the photographer included who this was exactly, as she took the time to set up lighting, angles etc. She didn't look that welcome as that guy on the right is giving her the old stink eye, but other than a quick reference to where this is, she didn't say his name. All I could get is a name on an ID and that no cussing sign. Therman H Lee, I tried variations of the name but couldn't find the exact address or name of the place. But I did find those exact chairs, which is really rare.
