Because if you don't remove the cork just right, it breaks in the middle, leaving it in a place you can't get to. You have the choice of either pushing it in all the way, where you will never ever remove it. Or break it up and hope it doesn't fall in. But of course it falls in now that's its smaller than the diameter of the neck of the jar.
