Hand colored photo from 1931
Original Title: Machine shop at Splitdorf Electrical Corp
Photographer: Unknown
Location: Newark, NJ
Splitdorf was an American electrical company located in Newark, NJ, that got into automotive ignition components just as cars were becoming popular. They created magnetos, spark plugs, later generators, and starter motors. They became the standard equipment for many US car companies. In 1923, Edison bought them out and they became the Splitdorf-Edison company.
As you can see everything is made by hand on specialized pieces of equipment. Presumably each frame above each lathe probably has the blueprints of the parts they make.
This department had a few lathes, what looks like cutting tools, and surface grinders. And as you can see many were allowed to sit which is always favorable.
Coloring wise, mostly I cleaned it up, removed the sepia, added green to the machines as I think most were some form of green. I did find that machine in the front and it came in green and gray. There is a light with a newspaper on it over that guys head in the middle, kind of wonder what that's about. And a series of hoses that are coming down the ceiling, which I can only assume is compressed air.
