This image was a part of a stereopticon, as an amusing tale of truth that they could all relate to in the day. I do know they chose the perfect child for this, he looks like the Antichrist in an apron, and he has no eyebrows, I guess that was fashionable at the time. Its hard to know if this was a real treatment in this store, or if this was a real store at all. I do know the names in the background are real, and the device is real, he's even standing on a box with glass legs. I can't decide if he has a toothache or a headache. He probably had a headache after though. There was a second image of this with his mouth open probably screaming.
This is one of those curious medical quackery's they had in the Victorian Era. They would create really fancy looking, steampunk like, machines, and the fancier it looked, the more they could charge.
This device is called an Electrostatic Generator, one would turn a crank, and quite a bit of power could be made, that would travel up the wire and into some part of you. I would have to guess that the burning sensation on your skin, and maybe your heart stopping would make you focus less on the original pain.
