During the Civil War, City Point was the major storage spot for material, weapons and food. The ships brought in supplies, railroads loaded them up and it was sent along the front line. The town of City Point was located at a strategic point of land at the confluence of the James River and the Appomattox river. This confluence provided deep water access to Union controlled Chesapeake Bay.
City Point rapidly expanded as the Union logistic hub of the battle for Richmond and Petersburg. It became one of the busiest ports in the world. The port often had anywhere between 150-200 ships anchored and waiting to unload. Over 390 ships were used to carry supplies and munitions from the northern supply point to the City point. Over 3000 workers were employed to offload the ships and transfer it back to rail cars.
The locomotives shown here are: The General grant (upper right), The Governor NYE (on the upper right). And the General J.C. Robinson in the front. And while people were probably used to seeing colorful trains, it was still fun to watch it in person, as it is today.
