Fun fact: In French, Belle Isle means "beautiful island". It was also called "pig island" when traders stored their livestock there before it was developed.
But in the 1900's it was a fun place to sit in the warm spring air, and see how many people can fit into a canoe without sinking or tipping over. Others would sit in the grass, eating a picnic or just stare off into the distance.
