Based on what I'm seeing, there is either a lot of shadow between the buildings or its rather cloudy. Old film seems to always have a foggy background, but this seems heavier than usual. I can only assume its fog, smog or dust, or in coming rain.
I was able to find the original postcard, but still chose my own colors because the card didn't convince me.
There are a few buildings left today. The ones on the left are mostly there, that concrete on on the right and the one next to that, and a few down the road. The theatre is gone, but it lasted a long time, they demolished it in the 1980's. And that hotel on the right was imploded in 1999, there is a move of that online.
I wonder how long it took to dig that hole by hand? Notice the barricade is an old telegraph pole arm. There is also a 5 plug fire hydrant on that side.
