This one had a lot more detail than I thought, it had more detail than most typical city scenes. It's incredible to think that a camera from over a hundred years ago could capture the detail it did. I've made this department store a number of times, from different viewpoints and floors. This one in fact I made already, but its from the front to the back. This is from the back to the front, only it's a different year. So nothing lined up from the one I made already.
This store is packed to the brim with stuff. I can't even ID most of it. I see brushes, combs, a ton of fabric, ribbons, lace, and mostly stuff you would find in a medicine cabinet. A bunch of Jesus frames, stuff that comes with frames, lots of boxes.
Those things that look like cash registers, were actually credit charge stamping machines with a phone, maybe it was an early form of credit cards. They would call a clerk and get approval from "credit specialists", in the back room, so they can charge their purchases.
This store has a decent history. It started off as the Elliot building, it was located at the northwest corner of Grand River Ave and Woodward Ave (the barns block), that was in 1894. The building had a store called The William H. Elliott Dry Goods, he sold carpets, draperies, and children's clothing until 1909. In 1910 the company consolidated with the Taylor-Woolfenden Company, and they were renamed to Elliott-Taylor-Woolfenden, which was probably a pain to write down everywhere.
