Description
Colorized photo from 1942, August
Original title: Chrysler Corporation Dodge Truck plant
Photographer: Arthur S. Siegel
Location: Detroit, MI
I couldn't tell what the floor was made of. If you look at that metal barrel, there is a ring around it, suggesting its cement there. If that is the case, what is the floor made of? It looks a lot like dirt to me, but I can't see them making it dirt. It's not wood, it would catch fire. The rest of this plant used pavers and because I needed contrast, I went the theme and made this floor red too.
Usually when I find an interesting picture there is only one single image, and yet this one had eight. Some were blurred, others had grinning weirdo's. I wanted one with good contrast, sharpness and people just working. And because this was a free hand shot, none of them lined up, so I couldn't use parts from each one like I can do sometimes.
Anyway, these trucks are WC53 Carryall's. It was a sort of station wagon and was used as an ambulance a lot. They are making some kind of jeep in the back as well. I don't believe they would be painting this now, so I kept the metal raw looking. I also found it interesting that there are no fans in here. It's August, big windows, it must have been like death valley inside. Some of them sure look hot to me.
