Description
Colorized photo from 1893
Original Title: South Water Street, East from Market
Photographer: S.L. Stein Pub. Co.
Location: 235 south water street, Chicago, IL
This originally was a postcard, so it lacked the detail I usually like seeing in an image like this, it also lacked the range of gray depth. But it is what it is. Despite all of that there was still a surprising amount of detail. I was able to find a few postcards from the time in color, none were of this spot.
They described the area as busy, noisy, colorful, and the stench of horses and rotting produce. It's the reason why they moved this market across town to a new building.
After they moved the market they started on a new road, they devised that it would have an upper and lower half, so passenger traffic can be on top and commercial on the bottom. They called the road Wacker Drive, and the spot we are standing on is about 301 W. Wacker Dr. In the picture its South Water St and Market St, both were turned into Wacker Drive.
